Documentaries lead the pack among new indie releases this weekend:

  • ‘The Act of Killing.’  Highly-touted doc about death squad leaders in Indonesia challenged to recreate their horrific crimes. Directed by Josh Oppenheimer. Not previewed. (Angelika Dallas, Angelika Plano)
  • ‘Blackfish.’ Should creatures of the wild be captured and trained for our amusement? The tragic case of a Sea World trainer and a killer whale is examined by director Gabriela Cowperthwaite in this controversial documentary. Not previewed. (Angelika Dallas)
  • ‘Crystal Fairy and the Magical Cactus.’ Michael Cera stars as an American youth in Chile who heads out on a drug-taking adventure but may find himself in the process. Directed by Sebastian Silva. Not previewed. (Landmark Magnolia)
  • ‘Terms and Conditions May Apply.’ A timely doc about Internet privacy, big business, and the government.  Not previewed. (The Texas Theatre)

Opening in wide release:

  • ‘2 Guns.’ Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg star as two undercover agents who end up working together in the criminal world without realizing that they’re undercover cops. Directed by Baltasar Kormakur (‘Contraband’). Advance word has been mixed to positiveNot previewed.
  • ‘The Smurfs 2.’ The little blue guys return. Advance word says your very young children my be pleased. Not previewed.
