With only two new indie releases this weekend, this might be a good time to catch up on recent films you may have missed — and keep out of the heat!

  • ‘Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me.’  The latest in a string of documentaries about musical groups who fell between the cracks during their prime. This one centers on quasi-pop band Big Star, led by Alex Chilton. Directed by Drew DeNicola. Not previewed. (The Texas Theatre.) A live Q&A with the filmmaker will be conducted after the 7:00 p.m. screening on Friday, July 26.
  • ‘Still Mine.’ James Cromwell and Genevieve Bujold star as a longtime married couple who struggle to build one last home for themselves. Directed by Michael McGowan. Not previewed. (Landmark Magnolia)

Opening in wide release:

  • ‘The Wolverine.’ Hugh Jackman reprises his role as a seemingly indestructible mutant with very sharp claws. This time he heads to Japan in a stand-alone adventure. With Tao Okamato, Rila Fukushima, Haruhiko Yamanouchi, and Hiroyuki Sanada; directed by James Mangold. Reviewed here. Recommended.
  • ‘The To Do List.’ Aubrey Plaza stars as a high school senior who decides she must experience every possible type of sexual activity before she begins college in the fall. Fun for the entire family! Written and directed by Maggie Carey. Advance word has been mixed. Not previewed.
