The Alamo Drafthouse in Richardson opened last night (more on that later), and will, I hope, soon be another location where independent films can be enjoyed from time to time. Meanwhile, four fictional features open:
- ‘Post Tenebras Lux.’ Critically-acclaimed film by Carlos Reygadas about an upscale family that moves to the countryside. In 35mm. Not previewed. (The Texas Theatre)
- ‘Blue Jasmine.’ Woody Allen’s sometimes brilliant, sometimes maddening film about the 1%, featuring an outstanding performance by Cate Blanchett. Recommended highly; reviewed here. (Landmark Magnolia, Cinemark West Plano)
- ‘Jug Face.’ A horror movie about a small town that periodically sacrifices one of its citizens to appease a local god. Not previewed. (Landmark Inwood)
- ‘Lovelace.’ Amanda Seyfried does very fine work in a film that is more interested in turning up its nose than in revealing the truth. Not recommended; reviewed here. (Angelika Dallas, Angelika Plano, AMC Stonebriar, Studio Movie Grill Spring Valley)
Opening in wide release:
- ‘Elysium.’ Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, and Sharlto Copley star in a new slice of social science fiction from ‘District 9’ writer and director Neill Blomkamp. Recommended; reviewed here.
- ‘Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.’ A sequel, apparently intended for young adults. Not previewed.
- ‘Planes.’ Disney spins off Pixar’s not-so-beloved ‘Cars’ franchise. Not previewed.
- ‘We’re the Millers.’ Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston is an R-rated road trip comedy. Not previewed.
